We are a full service insulation contractor, which means we recommend the material that suits the space rather than the one we happen to sell. Spray foam, blown-in cellulose, fiberglass batts and mineral wool each do one job better than the others, and an attic in Alcona, a crawl space under a Lefroy cottage and a steel shop in Innisfil Heights are three different jobs.
The existing insulation is looked at before anything is priced. The depth in the attic is measured, the walls are checked with a thermal camera where they can be, and a written scope follows that names the material, the thickness and the area for every part of the work. Every job we take on is fully insured. The material is installed to the manufacturer's depth, the depth is measured as it goes in, and the finished attic is photographed so you can see what you paid for without climbing the ladder. If a part of the job belongs to another trade, such as a roof leak or a bathroom fan that vents into the attic, we say so and we do not insulate over it.

We top up, replace or air seal attics more than any other part of a building, because the attic is where the largest share of a house's heat escapes. An Alcona subdivision house from the 1990s was insulated to the code of its year, which is roughly half of what is recommended today, and a Stroud or Cookstown house from the 1970s often has less than that once the loose fill has settled.

Ice dams are caused by heat leaving the house, not by the snow itself, and the repair is an insulation and air sealing job rather than a roofing job. Innisfil sits at the south end of the Georgian Bay snowbelt, and the Barrie weather station averages about 223 centimetres of snow a year, with January alone bringing more than sixty. Snow that deep sitting on a roof over a warm, leaky attic melts from underneath, runs to the cold eave and freezes into a dam that pushes water back under the shingles.
The fix is to stop the heat getting into the attic in the first place. We seal the ceiling from the attic side, insulate to the recommended depth and make sure the eave vents are open, which keeps the roof deck cold and the snow on top of it frozen where it belongs.

Insulation removal is the first step whenever the attic has been wet, has housed animals, or is holding material that cannot be built over. Raccoons and squirrels get into more Innisfil attics than people expect, especially in the treed lots at Big Bay Point and along the shore, and soiled loose fill has to be vacuumed out and the framing cleaned before anything new goes in.

Cottage insulation is a job almost unique to this town, because Innisfil has more converted cottages than almost any municipality its size. Mineral wool in an interior wall or a floor takes the sound of a home office, a music room, a rental suite or a bathroom down to a level the rest of the house can live with, and it goes in cleanly during a renovation or a new build.

Most insulation jobs in Innisfil land in these market ranges. Blown-in cellulose in an attic runs about $1.50 to $2.50 a square foot installed, so a typical 1,200 square foot attic is roughly $1,800 to $3,000. Batts in open framing run about $1 to $2.50 a square foot depending on thickness. Spray foam runs about $3 to $5.50 a square foot for open cell and $5.50 to $8.50 for closed cell at typical thicknesses. Removal of old material adds roughly $1 to $2 a square foot. Air sealing an attic usually adds $500 to $1,500.

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program pays a rebate on attic, wall and basement insulation and on air sealing for eligible homeowners, and we supply the paperwork it needs. The amounts and the rules change from year to year, most insulation measures need a home energy assessment before and after the work, and an attic-only path has been available without one. Whether it is worth applying depends on how your house is heated and how much insulation is there now, so ask us at the visit and we will tell you plainly.

Air sealing and ventilation go in before the insulation does. Top plates, wiring holes, pot lights and the attic hatch are sealed, and baffles are fitted at the eaves so the soffits keep breathing.
The insulation is installed to the depth in the scope. Blown-in depth is checked against rulers fixed to the trusses, spray foam thickness is measured as it goes on, and batts are cut to fit around every box and pipe.
We tidy up and hand over. The work area is vacuumed, the photographs of the finished attic or wall are sent to you, and the paperwork you need for a rebate application is included.

The current recommendation for this climate is about R-50 to R-60 in the attic, which is roughly 16 to 20 inches of blown-in cellulose. Most Innisfil houses built before 2012 have R-20 to R-40, and settled loose fill can be less. We measure the depth at the visit and tell you what a top-up to the target would take.

Blown-in cellulose wins in an open attic, where it reaches the same R-value at a much lower cost. We recommend the material by the location, not by habit.
