Insulation removal is the vacuuming or bagging of old attic, wall and crawl space material that is wet, soiled by animals, mouldy, burnt, failed or simply in the way of a renovation, and we do it as its own service or as the first step of a new install. The material is taken away and the framing is cleaned before anything new goes in. Insurance covers the work.
Removal is always quoted as a separate line, so you can see what it costs on its own.
Old attic material has to come out when it has been wet, when animals have nested in it, or when it has been contaminated by smoke or mould, because none of those things can be built over. Roof leaks and ice dams soak loose fill and batts and they never fully dry. Raccoons, squirrels and mice get into more Innisfil attics than people expect, especially in the mature lots at Big Bay Point and along the shore, and soiled material has to be removed and the space cleaned before anything new goes in.
We remove loose fill with a truck-mounted vacuum parked in the driveway and a hose run up through the hatch, so the material goes straight out of the house into sealed bags without passing through the rooms below. Batts are pulled and bagged in the attic and lowered out. The joists are then vacuumed clean, and any droppings or debris left behind are dealt with before the new material goes in.

Vermiculite is a grey-brown, pebble-like loose fill common in houses built before the mid-1980s, and some of it contains asbestos. If we find it in a Stroud, Churchill or Cookstown attic we stop, and it is tested before it is disturbed. Vermiculite that tests positive is removed by an asbestos abatement contractor rather than by us, and we insulate after it is gone.
Spray foam that has shrunk, cracked or never stopped smelling cannot be sprayed over, and removing it means cutting and scraping it back to clean framing by hand. Under the older lakeshore cottages and bungalows from Alcona down to Gilford, the most common find is fiberglass batts that have absorbed moisture from a vented crawl space and dropped out of the joists onto the ground. Those are bagged and taken out, the ground is cleaned, and the crawl space insulation page describes the assembly that replaces them.
