Batts are fiberglass or mineral wool cut to fit between studs and joists, and they are the simple choice for open framing in a basement, a garage, an addition or a new build. Batts are inexpensive, they go in quickly, and fitted properly they perform to their rating. The work is insured.
Every batt is cut to the cavity, split around wiring and pipes, and fitted without gaps or compression, because a batt installed badly loses a large share of its R-value.
A batt only reaches its rated R-value when it fills the cavity completely without being compressed, and that is where most batt jobs go wrong. A batt jammed behind a wire, folded around a box or left short at the top plate leaves a cold strip that shows up on a thermal camera as a stripe of heat loss. Where the framing is standard, we cut and split every batt so the cavity is full edge to edge.
Where the cavities are irregular, such as an old cottage frame in Belle Ewart, blown-in cellulose usually fits better, and the blown-in insulation page explains why.
Fiberglass batts are the everyday choice and the least expensive, and they suit walls, floors and attic floors where a batt is the right form. Mineral wool batts cost more but hold their shape, shed water, resist fire and block sound, so we use them for garage walls and ceilings shared with the house, for mechanical rooms, and for the interior walls covered on our soundproofing insulation page.
Kraft-faced batts carry their own vapour retarder on the warm side. Unfaced batts need a separate poly vapour barrier, and we fit and seal it as part of the job.
Batts are what we install in most framed basement walls, in the ceilings of garages with a room above, and in the walls of additions and new houses going up across Innisfil. Batts do not belong directly against a damp foundation wall or in the joists over a vented crawl space, because they hold moisture and fall out of place. Much of the older lakeshore housing from Sandy Cove to Gilford sits on shallow crawl spaces, and fallen, wet batts hanging from the joists are the most common thing we find under them.
