Blown-In Cellulose Fills An Attic Better Than Batts Do
Blown-in cellulose covers an attic floor in one continuous layer with no gaps at the trusses, the wiring or the ducts, which is where batts leave cold spots. Cellulose is made from recycled paper treated against fire and pests, it holds about R-3.7 an inch, and it settles into a dense blanket that resists air moving through it. Blown fiberglass is lighter and slightly lower in R-value per inch, and we install it where a customer prefers it.

Dense-Pack Blown-In Insulation Fills Walls Without Opening Them
Dense-pack cellulose is also how we fill the empty walls of an older house without stripping the drywall. Cellulose is packed through small holes drilled in each stud bay from inside or out, at a density high enough that it cannot settle, and the holes are plugged afterward. The farmhouses around Churchill and Stroud and the older streets of Cookstown often have nothing at all in the walls, and dense-pack is the least disruptive way to change that.

Netted Blown-In Insulation Suits New Construction And Additions
On open framing, blown-in cellulose is held in the stud bays behind a netting stapled to the studs, then packed to density before the drywall goes on. It fills around wiring, boxes and plumbing far better than a batt cut around them, and it gives the wall a sound and air resistance that a batt wall does not. The additions and rebuilds going up along the shore at Alcona and Lefroy are a good fit for it.

Blown-In Insulation Still Needs Air Sealing And Ventilation First
Loose fill slows heat but does not stop air on its own, so the ceiling is sealed and the eaves are baffled before the hose comes out. Innisfil's snow load makes this matter more than it does further south, because a leaky ceiling under a deep drift is how ice dams start.
